For more information, read the rest of the post. You can earn via referral links like that once you get an AdSense account. I will put a link to a post I will publish later to show how you can earn via referral links like that later.
Someone asked these questions about AdSense, and I though I might as well answer them in a post. Will expand on this post as I have more to add.
1) How can i earn from Google AdSense.
2) How will i be paid for it .
3) Do i need to pay anything to Google for this .
4) If i need to pay anything how much it is .
5) Will my personal information will be kept confidential.
6) Do i need any special software.
But before you can earn anything, you will need a website. If you don't have one, you can start a blog, and Dummies Guide to Google Blogger will guide you. Then you will have to apply for an AdSense account. You can do that by clicking on the text link that says "Generate revenue from your website. Google AdSense" at the top of the right sidebar.

How can I earn from Google AdSense
You can earn from Google AdSense in three ways:Contextual Advertisements
By placing contextual text or images ads on your sites. These ads are of two types - CPC (Cost per Clicks) ads for which you will only be paid if readers click on the ads, and CPM (Cost per 1000 impressions) for which you will be paid for just displaying the ads on your site, irrespective of whether the readers click on them or not. Although it is Cost per 1000 impressions, you don't need to reach 1000 impressions to be paid, but you would be paid proportionately for each click. The figures are given as cost per 1000 impressions because if they are given as cost per impressions, the figure will be so small that it will be below 2 decimal points. However, in the long term, CPC and CPM ads should give equivalent earnings to you.Types of Contextual Ad units
There are 2 type of contextual advertisement units that you can put in your site - ad units and link units. Ad units displayed the ads directly on your site. An example is the Wide Skyscraper Ad unit you see in the left sidebar in this blog. You will be paid as explained as above. An example of link unit is the one you see just below the title of this blog in the Header. You will not be paid for clicks on links in link units. However, clicking on one of them will cause a page with ads relevant to the title of the link. You will be paid as explained above for clicks or impressions as explained above. The maximum number of Ad units you can put in a page is 3, and the maximum number of link unit is 1.AdSense Search
You can put up to 2 AdSense search boxes on your site. They can be just for searching the Web, or they can be used for searching only the content of your site. You will not be paid for readers for using the searchbox, only if they click on any ads that may be displayed in the search result page.Referrals
You can also earn by referring people to join AdSense or AdWord, or to get other things like FireFox with Google toolbar, Google Pack, Picasa. You can see examples of referral text links at the top of the right sidebar of this blog. You can place a maximum of 2 referral buttons or text links per product on your sites, and if your readers click on these, you may be paid under certain conditions. Currently, there are 4 referral products that available - Google AdSense, Google AdWords, FireFox with Google toolbar and Picasa (now being replaced by Google Pack, depending on which country you reside in). For Google AdSense, if your reader join AdSense via your referral button, you will be paid US100 if they manage to earn US$100 within 180 days (6 months). For Google AdWords, if your reader sign up and spend US$100 within 90 days, you will earn US$20. For FireFox with Google toolbar, if your reader download, install and runs the browser for the first time, you will be paid up to US$1 depending on their geographical location. For Picasa, when a user you've referred to Picasa downloads and runs the product for the first time, you will earn up to US$1, also depending which geographical location.UPDATE 2 February 2007: The pricing structure for AdSense and AdWord have been improved and it is now easier to get a referral fee for them. If within 180 days, the person you referred to AdSense earn their USD5, your account will also be credited with USD5. If within the same period, they earned USD100, your account will be credited with an additional USD250. In addition to these, if within any 180 days you referred 25 publishers who each earn more than $100 within 180 days of their respective sign-ups and are all eligible for payout, you will be awarded a $2,000 bonus (bonus payouts are limited to 1 per year).
When an advertiser (AdWords) you refer spends $5 within 90 days of sign-up (in addition to the $5 sign-up fee) you will be credited with $5. When that same advertiser spends $100 within 90 days of sign-up, you will be credited with an additional $40. If, in any 180 day period, you refer 20 advertisers who each spend more than $100 within 90 days of their respective sign-ups, you will be awarded a $600 bonus (bonus payments are limited to 1 per year).
How will i be paid for it
You will be paid if in a month you earn US100 or more. If you earn less than that, you will not be paid, but the amount will be carried forward and you will be paid when the total reaches US100 or more. You will normally receive your payment by check sent to the address you registered when you apply (even if you don't live in the US). Some countries have the option of being paid by EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer) where the payment is transferred by wire, and will be faster and cost less than being paid by check.Do i need to pay anything to Google for this
No, you do not need to pay anything to Google. However, for earnings obtained from ads via AdSense searches, some amount may be deducted for the cost of performing the search, but the amount deducted will never be more than what you earn. Will my personal information will be kept confidential
The only information that anyone can get from the Web is your AdSense ID (which can be obtained by viewing the source code of pages which have your AdSense ads, but which will be useless to them as far as getting personal information about you.) No other personal information is displayed anywhere on the Web.Do I need any special software
No, you don't need any software or download anything from AdSense. To participate, all you need to do is to sign into your AdSense account and generate the scripts you need to add to your site to get the AdSense products displayed. It is very easy to apply for an AdSense account. All you need is a website which some content (someone got his account approved by having just one post in a blog), click on the "Generate revenue from your website. Google AdSense" text link at the top of the left sidebar and fill in your particulars

hi this is raj, nice blog buddy.
can you tell me wether ill b paid only once a bonus of 250$ when any referal of mine earns 100$ or is it like that ill get it for every 100$ earning of my referral.
plz reply at slayerkumar@yahoo.co.in
Hi Kumar,
With the new scheme recently introduced, you get $5 when the person you refer earns $5 within 180 days, and a further $250 if he/she earns US100. That is a great incentive.

Hi Fran,
I hope you are clicking on the second link in my second response as the first one is on a site with adsense in the URL and I have been told not to put adsense products there. The content has thus been transferred. Just to make sure here is the link to the correct post in the correct site again: How do I earn from AdSense.
I just checked the link in my response, and there are AdSense ads there, so I know I gave the correct link. However, if Javascript is disabled in your computer, those Ads would not be seen. Is Javascript disabled in your computer? To check, try this site: How to disable or enable JavaScript. (There are also AdSense ads in the blogs in my signature line)

Hi sketch_20,
I had a quick look. Very first thing I would suggest is change to a 3 column template. Refer to
Best template for earning from your blog.
There are plenty of choice and more to come when I have the time (I am running to keep up):
New Blogger template modified by Stavanger
Dots New Blogger template with Header
New Blogger templates modified by Ramani
New Blogger templates by Isnaini
New Blogger templates by Thur
Ramani's New Blogger Neo template
New Blogger template by Final Sense
New Blogger templates by BloggerBuster
Add a sitesearch box, preferably at the top of your main column (posts). Earning you get will probably be less than what you can get from Contextual ads, but it will be helpful for your visitors to find topics in your blog. You can add up to 3 sites plus the web and you can add max 2 search box. I have 2 at both
Blogger Tips and Tricks and
Blogger for Dummies
(one in the header because it cannot fit into the main column and one in the footer which will be less visible)
To put ads, search box in the header or main column, refer to
Adding graphic, ads, searchbox etc in New Blogger blog Header
Add "stick post", ads, search box, etc at the top of the main column (posts). There is an easier way and I hope to have time to make a post on that, but I still prefer this one.
Try to put your ads above the fold, but it really depend on what you place importance on, easy navigation for your visitors or hopefully more clicks or referrals. Also, some may be put off by too many ads above the fold and not being able to see the navigation ads or profile without scrolling down. But if your site is of great interest to the visitors, you may get away with it.

What a grateful blogger did for me
(no one should feel obligated. Everthing completely voluntary. However, by doing so, you may also help your visitors find helpful information and help. You may even pick up various ways of linking sites there too)
I can't understand how you can actually put all the ads on your blog?I am new here. All i know is sign a adsence account and let google put any ads on your post?
from where did you get that ads such as logos of amazon ,contextual ads link posted.they are all scattered everywhere?

Hi,
I'm using adsense in my Planet Apex blog and earnings are relatively good. For me the Adsense for Content or Contextual Advertisements as you called them in this post works best. The Adsense search is not much good and referrel is hopeless.
Placement of the ads is very important for making money with adsense. At the start I had only a Click trough ratio of only 1% but after I placed them within posts and blended the ads with my blog design it increased to of around 4-5%.
My experience is if you want to earn with Adsense you must be patient. Don't expect a gold pot immediately and experiment with different ad layouts and placings, because you can't say what placement works best in your blog until you check it
Hi Planet Apex,
Glad to hear you are doing well, only thing is, I wished you have joined via my "Generate revenue from your website. Google AdSense". Then perhaps I could have shared in your good fortune. You said referrals are hopeless. Yes, perhaps true. Total earnings normally less than from contextual ads. However, I have had a quite a number of conversions, so bringing me only $5, but not a few bringing in $250. Yes they are rare, but significant.
Regarding ad placements, I have been struggling with this question. Do I want to overwhelm visitors with too prominent ads like incorporate ads within posts and discourage them from visiting again, or do I downplay them and go for more return visitors. I have no time to keep track. Your CTR increased, but have the average monthly earning increased?
BTW, since you are interested in having ads in content, do have a look at Successes with Kontera ContentLink. They serve in-text ads (within the content where readers' attention are focused on) and I have already got a couple of checks from them although I have not been long with them. There are a few disadvantages compared with AdSense, but AdSense had been around for a long time, but Kontera ContentLink had only been on the scene for a very short period of time and I expect them to improve over time.
Will welcome more feedback regarding your experience.

Alternatives to Google AdSense
Hi Peter,
I'm also sad I couldn't join through you. You seem to be a hard working guy and I like people like that.
Yes, there is a downside to placing ads within posts. So you have to choose. I'm from Sri Lanka and here even knowing how to use a computer is a luxury. Using the Internet is expensive. At this moment I want to get money to pay my Internet bill and hopefully open my own hosted websites. I'm not making much (I got 23 dollars last month) but I'm satisfied with it compared to the traffic I have. You can read about these things in my blog.
Anyway, I posted those above tips here because I wish someone had told me those at the start. For the first few months I got only 2 with the 1% CTR and since I change it, I make 10-15$ with the same amount of traffic.
Regarding Kontera, I didn't use them because I had the same scruples you have regarding adsense within posts. Also mine is general topics blog so how do you think it will work with my kind of blog? I would like to hear your experience with it.
BTW, you may be the ideal guy to advice me on something. I have got a request for a paid link. I'm not sure whether to eccept it because I have heard Google penalizes these things. I would like to hear your opinion on this please.
Thanks
Hi Planet Apex,
There is another possibility, Google ads between post. Less intrusive. Refer to AdSense between posts. However, with some templates, you may have to do some editing of the template before the ads will display.
Have you tried Kontera ContentLink in-text ads

hi karthik,
what kind of content does your blog have?
Hi Karthik,
I had the same problem before, I guess Google won't allow you to create just one blog then apply the adsense account, I have at least 2 blogs to get my adsense account approved. Probably not just the number of blogs, but also the time that blog exists so that they do not sense that "you are just creating the blog because you want to earn $$".
Hi Peter,
I have two blogs, but traffic seems low, what do you suggest? You can view my blogs via "view my complete profile".
Hi friend I have just started to use google adsene. I don't know, anything about it. I read your blog and I got more information. But I have one question that i hade make more money but i don't know who is clicking on my ads link. Is there any problem?
You will never know who clicked on the ads, only statistics like how many from this ad unit, that ad unit, etc using custom channels or which blogs (if you have more than one) by using URL channel
Hi Peter,
